Trademark 'filed in 6 hours' vs actually registered: what you're really buying
Filing is a receipt. Registration takes the registry 12–18 months. Understanding the difference saves you from the industry's favourite sleight of hand.
The two numbers that matter
Government fee: ₹4,500 per class if you're an individual, startup or MSME with an Udyam certificate; ₹9,000 per class otherwise. Professional fees are on top. Any quote that doesn't ask whether you hold an Udyam certificate isn't optimising your ₹4,500.
The application number arrives on filing day and lets you use ™ immediately. The registration certificate — the thing that lets you use ® — arrives after examination, possible objection, and publication: 12 to 18 months if everything goes cleanly.
Why a search-first flow protects your money
Roughly 40% of applications receive an examination report (objection). Many of those were predictable from a proper availability search across identical and phonetically similar marks in the same and allied classes. A serious provider gives you the search report and a written go/no-go opinion before you spend the government fee — and lets you stop there if the mark is doomed.
The objection add-on trap
The pattern in complaint boards: a cheap filing fee, then when the (statistically likely) examination report arrives, a surprise quote for the response — or worse, the report is never communicated and the application is deemed abandoned. Ask upfront: what does an examination-report response cost, and who watches the deadline? Get it in writing before filing, not after.
